About Unkind Gifts

Unkind Gifts fills a neglected space in the recovery literature, offering a user friendly approach to mindfulness-based, creative healing for trauma survivors and those who care about them.

Dr. Ellen Ranney has devoted her career to working with individuals and families affected by trauma and loss.  The work became personal when she was diagnosed with breast cancer at age 38. Using journal entries and artwork to document her journey, Ranney evokes the turmoil of trauma and recovery in the midst of daily life.  Combining her personal story with her professional training and experience in the field of Family Systems Therapy and Trauma Treatment, she guides readers through the experience of recovery from emotional injury.  Her FLOWING(c) model organizes the journey through flexibility and creativity.  Additional information identifies the neurobiological and developmental implications of trauma, gently supporting recovery as a lifelong practice.
